The word Futsal is not widely recognised in England but its meaning is well known throughout most of the rest of the world.
Futsal is a version of five-a-side football that can be played both inside and outside on existing basketball sized courts, without the use of side walls or boards.
The origins of the game can be traced back to Uruguay in 1930. It gained rapid popularity throughout South America from where it spread to Europe.
International tournaments have been held since 1965, with FIFA establishing a World Futsal Championship in 1988 and UEFA setting up a European Championship. Club matches are also extremely well established and supported:.
The FA has established a national tournament, the winners of which represent England in the UEFA Futsal Club Championship Finals. People who are already qualified as 11-a-side football referees only need to attend a “FUTSAL Referee Conversion Course” in order to extend their existing qualifications so that they will also qualify as FUTSAL referees.
